Fun times..

Brady had his interview for YCIS (Yew Chung, Rilynn's school) to start next fall, but he is still on the waitlist for now. So in the meantime, I've been keeping busy with playdates,  a music class (Jitterbugs), swimming, soccer, and of course going outside to enjoy our beautiful spring weather!!

Mama Meya, one of Brady's favorite indoor play spaces. It has everything a kid would ever want to play with. It also has free WiFi and you can order food and drinks while the kids are playing! We REALLY need one of these back home :) We'll be coming here for an Easter egg hunt on the 23rd, which we're looking forward to.

The kids were invited to a costume bday party in our compound. I was able to score this cool costume for Brady at my first garage sale here :)

Beautiful Snow White

Walked around for a couple hours this morning after soccer. It was mid 60s today and BEAUTIFUL out!!!

Brady wins!

Picked up some cheap flowers (10rmb = $1.50) from a lady by our house. She was very kind and gave the kids a flower too :)

Chad and I gave the Mandarin a try, but just couldn't get it. We were taking lessons twice a week, from 7:30-9 when the kids were sleeping. With all of Chad's traveling and having to give up 2 of our nights we decided to end it this week. If our assignment was longer, I'm sure we would've tried hard a little harder to stick it out, but we've already been here for 4 months and are surviving :) Rilynn definitely knows a lot more than us!!! LOL. At least back home they are now offering Mandarin language in the schools so she'll hopefully be able to keep it up.

Not sure if I had already mentioned this in the blog yet, but we were finally able to rent out our home starting March 1. They signed a 1 year lease, so now hopefully it will be OK when we are back!! It will be weird coming home this summer, but not able to stay at our own home :( However, REALLY looking forward to coming home in July for the summer!!!!

Miss you all..

Soccer in China

Funny story... Kids started soccer 3 weeks ago. The 3-4 year olds were first and then the 5-6 years old were next. Well, Brady was up first and he had about 4 other kids in the class with him. About 2 minutes  goes by (not even done with the first 'drill') and the coach comes up to the parents and tells us that he cannot coach these kids.. LOL.. We're like, "Um OK" not really too sure what had just happened. He didn't even ask for any help from the parents, but did say that maybe another coach would be better.. Since Rilynn's class wasn't for a half an hour the coach did decide to 'play' with Brady's class. Rilynn did pretty good in her class, especially being the only girl :) We were bummed about Brady's class getting cancelled and not really quite sure how to break the news to him since he had been so excited to start, so I emailed the director. She said that the coach did not feel comfortable coaching the youngsters and also said that most of them did not speak English (which wasn't true), but that he said Brady would be ok playing with Rilynn's class. So now little Brady is playing with the 'big' kids and doing very well!!

Went out for St. Patrick's Day here and had a great time out with some friends here! Started out as a happy hour at Morton's Steakhouse enjoying some tasty chocolate martini's and free steak sandwiches. Then headed over to a local bar down the road from us and enjoyed some more cocktails and had a great night!!

Some new friends, Kelly from WI and Hiliary from New Zealand

This band was awesome!! It's so amazing to me how when they sing there is no accent.. The male singer came over to take some requests from us and he had such a heavy accent, but when they were up there singing it was just like being back at home :)

Strawberry picking..

We had every intention to meet up some friends today for some strawberry picking at an organic farm, however only accomplished the latter. 2 LONG hours in the car and an hour late to meet our friends, we finally found the farm :) No English was spoken, but was able to figure it out-Grab baskets, pick strawberries, get weighed and boxed up, pay. Done.

Kids had a lot of fun. Rilynn could've picked all of the strawberries in the farm if we hadn't stopped her! LOL. Strawberries are pretty expensive here, so we hadn't even bothered getting any until now. They were about 25rmb (~$3.50) for 500g compared to the stores that are selling them around 85rmb (~$12). We walked away with 2 large boxes for 150rmb (~$22) and now are set for strawberries for awhile!!

1st Field Trip...

Tuesday was Rilynn's 1st class field trip. They are learning about musical instruments as she will start to learn the violin soon. Her school requires violin lessons during school up until 3rd grade and then it's their choice. The older grades have an orchestra and put on some great shows.

So, her field trip was about a 10 minute bus ride to the Century Park campus of YCIS. Rilynn's school only goes up to 3rd grade and then they attend 4th grade + at Century Park. It was on a Tuesday so Susan wasn't here to watch Brady, but thankfully her teachers have been great letting Brady join in on Rilynn's festivities at school. So, Brady and I were able to ride the bus with her. The kids loved it! I feel a lot better seeing how nice the bus was as both kids will be riding it together in the fall. Rilynn was even able to sit with her 'boyfriend' Jiwoo :)

We got there and the music teacher explained a little about the different instruments they have. Then the kids were able to listen while the high school students had their music class. Lastly, they were able to play with some of the instruments. I was talking to a mom and she plays the violin and said that you are able to get violin's made here for like 100rmb ($15!!).. Before they head back she is thinking of buying a violin in each size for her kids to grow into... Might be an idea if Rilynn likes it!

Our great invitation..

Chad has been doing a lot of traveling around Asia lately. It first started with a 8 day trip back the US, then he was home for a few days, then off again for 12 days. Last Friday after he had been gone for 5 days, our ayi asked if he was coming homeon Saturday. I said, 'no' we still have another week. She then replied, "you come to my house and I'll cook you sweet & sour chicken with rice." Then she mentioned something about singing at 2:00. So, I had no idea really what was going on :) LOL- I asked several of my friends if they had even heard of anyone going over to their ayi's homes before and noone had, so I was a little nervous. I had no idea what to expect!

We had plans to go to a book signing that morning, but then we headed over to her house. It took us about 45 minutes in the car to get there, tons of traffic. She had given me her address in Chinese to give our driver. Well, he stopped and was looking around like he was confused, as we were in front of a mall. He gave her a call and next I know she is at the van. She was so excited to see us and carried Brady all the way to her apt complex, which was above the mall :) The living conditions here in Shanghai are not the greatest for most of the locals, so wasn't sure what was in store for us..

We walked into a nice building, took a ride up to the 7th floor in a nice elevator, walked down the nice hallway to apt 7B. She warned the kids that it was small, but they still didn't keep their comments to themselves about it! LOL..

We walked in and immediately to the right was a full bathroom- shower and normal toilet, which was a relief! I had been planning on holding it for awhile and was praying the kids would be alright.. Ha.. Most locals do not have their own toilet and definitely not their own shower!

We walked through a wall of hanging beads with a fridge (also not common) on the left next to a table and chairs. We'll call this the dining room and living room as it also had a couch and a large hutch. The coolest thing about this room what was in the hutch. Rilynn had traced a picture of Hello Kitty and wrote Susan's Chinese name (Sun Xia) on it and had given it to her awhile back. Susan had that picture in her hutch, framed :) Backed up to the hutch was a full size bed (or maybe it was just a board) as it was ROCK hard! Behind the hutch was a shower curtain pinned up for decorative purposes.. On the wall facing the bed was a large flat screen TV!!!! She also even had cable, as she put on some nice English movies for us :) I was shocked to see that.. Right next to the 'bedroom' was a revolving door that led to the kitchen. I did not go back there to see what it looked like, but could tell it was very tiny. Her apartment was very clean though, just small. It was pretty much the size of a master bedroom and all just one open room.

Susan has a daughter, but she does not live with her, but rather her grandparents. Susan and her husband both live and work in Shanghai. This is a very common situation where the parents leave their kids to find work and make money to send back to their families. Susan's sister did come over to help her cook up a feast for us. She seemed very nice, but spoke hardly any English.

I noticed that Susan had my bilingual cookbook opened up and was following the recipe in there and as she said, "Chinese no eat like this :)". We had white rice with sweet and sour chicken (using forks as she knows us! LOL), apples and kiwis peeled and cut up, hamburger patties (strange combo), pork meatballs, and then a whole slew of dumplings!! I was able to eat a dumpling with a chopstick though :) The whole table was filled with food. Brady did pretty good trying everything, but Rilynn stuck to the fruit..

Next thing I know, there is a knock at her door. Ended up being her former employee from Namibia, Africa stopping in for a visit. I had emailed this lady before as a reference and she was very nice. Won't lie, as it was a tad awkward having us both there, but it was fine. She had been in town for a week and was heading back. It did make me feel better that obviously they had a good relationship if she were to visit her while she was here.

Kids were winding down as it wasn't the most exciting place to spend 2 1/2 hours, so we went home. It turned out that at 2:00 there was going to be a performance inside the mall, but it was Sunday not Saturday. She wanted us to come back the next day, but we had plans to attend a birthday party already. However, when she came on Monday she showed me the pics on her camera of it. It looked pretty cool, seemed to have been a variety type show- acrobats, magic, dancing..

After talking to some more people I realized that what the kids and I experienced was not a typical invitation and that we should feel very honored that she invited us to her home. And that she must be very proud of where she lives, otherwise she would not have done that. So, after her only part time for 3 months, I am pretty sure we found a gem of an ayi!!

Book signing at the M on the Bund

Burn off that energy..

The kids have finally started taking some swimming lessons at our clubhouse. They also will both be starting soccer this Sunday. Brady absolutely ADORES his swim coach, Alex from Australia. He doesn't even wear a lifejacket during his lessons and is rocking his goggles! LOL

Rilynn is also loving them. Just recently she started swimming short distances by herself so she's gearing up for the 4th of July at Grandma and Grandpa Nathe's pool party!!

The best part of the swim lessons and soccer is that they are for the residents of our compound only. Which means all the kids live by us and are the same age, so the kids have been meeting a lot of new friends!!

Just a tad too tight!!! LOL
